Hua Duc Nhi, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development announced two days ago at an annual meeting in Hanoi, that Vietnam has increased its investment in forest projects to better protect forest resources.

The meeting assessed the progress made in implementing the forestry sector’s five year development strategy through 2010. The FSSP co-chair Juergen Hess expressed his satisfaction at the successful cooperation between the FSSP and its partners. An initiative was put forward to hold workshops to work out possible solutions to climate change. In particular it was proposed to work on a program for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation.

The Vietnamese forestry sector is managing over 16 million of land, making up half of the national territory. Of the figure, 1.83 million ha is forest land and 3.41 million ha is bare hills.

Solutions that were suggested at the meeting were to intensify investment in forest planning and protection. As well as encouraging institutional and individual investors as well as farmer households to expand productive forests, especially timber trees.
